Ancestry. Maternal Lineage

In the maternal ancestry study, a complete sequencing of the control region (D-Loop) of mitochondrial DNA (transmitted by mothers to all their descendants) is performed. The obtained DNA sequence is compared with a reference sequence, and the set of detected variants will determine the mitochondrial DNA haplogroup of a family lineage. This result provides an ancestry prediction on a broader temporal scale, independent of more recent events and population mixtures that may have occurred.

The ancestry test does not provide information about the origin of surnames. It also does not provide a genealogical tree or facilitate information about personal family research.

LabGenetics does not sell your data to third parties. Some laboratories lower the cost of these tests in order to later profit from your genetic data. At LabGenetics, we take your privacy very seriously and will only use your DNA data to perform your ancestry test.

We have pioneering professionals in performing DNA tests for paternity and maternity, as well as for relationships, genetic fingerprints, biological fluid detection, ancestry studies, and DNA tests for individuals affected by irregular adoptions or the abduction of newborns.

Taking and sending samples

For this analysis, the reference sample must be from swabs with cells from the buccal epithelium. Below are several options for taking and sending the samples:

  • Visit the LabGenetics facilities. Our staff will perform the buccal swab sample collection anonymously (no identification required).
  • Visit one of our partner centers if you are not in Madrid. Contact LabGenetics, and we will inform you about the nearest partner center.
  • Request a sample collection kit from us. We will send it to the address you provide. The request for the sample collection kit involves paying for the test at the same time. The kit contains precise usage instructions. Once the samples are taken, you must send them to us by postal mail, certified and urgent, or by courier. Shipping costs are at your expense.
  • Collect the samples yourself without a kit. To do this, follow the procedure below for each participant in the test:

Rub the inner right cheek of the mouth with a cotton swab (on both ends) for approximately 30 seconds. With another swab, repeat the same procedure on the inner left cheek. Then, it is VERY IMPORTANT to let both swabs air-dry at room temperature in a protected place for at least 1 hour. After this time, handling the samples as little as possible, place the swabs of each person in a paper envelope properly labeled with the person’s name.

It is important to handle the samples carefully to ensure their integrity, avoiding touching with fingers the areas likely to contain biological residues.

Once you have the samples taken and properly identified, you must download and complete the application form. Finally, you must send us the samples and the application form by postal mail, certified and urgent, or by courier. Shipping costs are at your expense.
