Genetic counseling is a process where patients, or their relatives, who have had, are currently experiencing, or are at risk of developing a genetic disease, receive support and guidance.
In this process, comprehensive genetic information about the disease is provided, and assistance is given to understand and adapt to the medical and familial consequences of a specific genetic condition. Factors such as the likelihood of developing or transmitting the condition, available diagnostic tests, and preventive measures for family planning are considered.
This process is important both before and after any genetic testing. It is essential to ensure that the patient and/or their relatives are informed, before giving informed consent, about the study being conducted: its usefulness, limitations, and advantages and disadvantages. Additionally, it is important to provide guidance to the patient and/or their relatives regarding the results of the analyses and their implications.
