Family Reunification

Family reunification in Spain is governed by Royal Decree 1155/2024 of 19 November, which approves the Regulations implementing Organic Law 4/2000 of 11 January on the rights and freedoms of foreign nationals in Spain and their social integration. According to this regulation, in the absence of other required documentation, the Embassy or Consular Office may request proof of paternity or maternity through DNA analysis in order to unequivocally establish and demonstrate the family relationship and thus authorize the entry of family members into the country.

At LabGenetics (Laboratorio de Genética Clínica S.L.), we can assist you with this genetic testing, as we are included in the List of Laboratories that comply with the Agreement of the CNUFADN (National Commission for the Forensic Use of DNA) on Accreditation and Quality Control (2025). Through its annual certification, the CNUFADN guarantees compliance with ENAC accreditation in accordance with ISO/IEC 17025, as well as successful participation in increasingly demanding national and international external quality control programs in the field of forensic genetics.

This recognition accredits us both as a forensic genetics laboratory with activity in the criminal and/or civil field (Download Criminal–Civil List), and as a genetics laboratory participating in the State DNA Bank of victims of the Civil War and the Dictatorship (Download Civil War Victims List).

Inclusion in this official list is the result of our firm commitment to quality, innovation, and excellence in genetic research. This effort is supported by the recognition of the Ministry of Justice, which endorses the technical and scientific rigor of our work.

This accreditation also facilitates the acceptance of reports issued by LabGenetics in national and international judicial proceedings, contributing to the removal of technical barriers and ensuring their validity for the incorporation of genetic profiles into official databases.

In cases of family reunification, and in the absence of other required documentation, the Embassy or Consular Office may request proof of paternity or maternity through DNA analysis in order to unequivocally demonstrate the family relationship and thus authorize the entry of family members into the country.

See the procedure

First, you must contact the Spanish Embassy or Consular Office in the country of origin to initiate the family reunification procedures.

The response from the consular office will provide the possibility of carrying out a DNA test to prove the family relationship, indicating LabGenetics (Laboratorio de Genética Clínica, S.L.) as a reference laboratory among those included in the list of laboratories that comply with the Agreement of the CNUFADN.

Next, you must contact us to initiate the genetic study. We will schedule an appointment for the sponsor in Spain to collect their sample at our laboratory or at one of our Partner Centers.

The results report may be sent directly to the Spanish Embassy or Consular Office, which will include it in the family reunification application. A copy of the report will also be sent to the applicant for family reunification. The Embassy or Consular Office, after reviewing the information, will then contact the applicants to inform them of the decision regarding their family reunification request.
