Grandparenthood

Labgenetics offers the possibility of performing the grandparent test, that is, an analysis to determine whether a person is the grandson or granddaughter of the couple formed by the paternal grandfather and the paternal grandmother, or of the couple formed by the maternal grandfather and the maternal grandmother.

In this way, paternity or maternity can be determined indirectly when there is no sample from the alleged father or the alleged mother. The analysis is carried out by studying autosomal STRs.

At LabGenetics we carry out grandparent tests using DNA tests. From 195 euros and with total confidentiality.

We have professionals who are pioneers in carrying out DNA tests for biological kinship research, which positions us as one of the reference centres in the Forensic Genetics sector at a European level. The results provided are conclusive, reliable and of high quality, complying with all the technical and methodological requirements necessary to obtain accreditation through the UNE-EN ISO/IEC 17025 standard for Forensic Genetics tests.

We have pioneering professionals in carrying out DNA tests for paternity and maternity, as well as kinship, genetic fingerprints, detection of biological fluids, ancestry studies and DNA tests for people affected by irregular adoptions or newborn abduction.

Samples to be analyzed

Samples from the paternal grandfather, samples from the paternal grandmother and samples from the grandson/granddaughter (indirect paternity test), or samples from the maternal grandfather, samples from the maternal grandmother and samples from the grandson/granddaughter (indirect maternity test).

It is mandatory to include the samples from the grandfather and the grandmother; if you do not have both samples, please contact LabGenetics for advice.

The type of sample can be any type that may contain DNA, such as swabs with cells from the oral epithelium, hair with roots, nails, cigarette butts, toothbrushes, chewing gum, fluid-containing supports, milk teeth, umbilical cord, cadaveric remains, etc.

Taking and sending samples

There are several procedures. Choose the one that best suits your needs.

  • Visit the LabGenetics facilities. Our staff will collect samples using a buccal swab anonymously (without needing to identify yourself).
  • If you are not in Madrid, visit one of our partner centers. Contact LabGenetics, and we will inform you about the closest partner center.
  • Request a sample collection kit from us. We will send it to the address you provide. Requesting the sample collection kit implies payment for the test at the same time. The kit contains detailed instructions for use. Once the samples are collected, you must send them to us by postal mail, certified and urgent, or by courier. Shipping costs are your responsibility.
  • Collect the samples yourself and without the need for a kit. For each participant in the test, proceed as follows:

Rub the inner right cheek of the mouth with a cotton swab (using both ends) for approximately 30 seconds. With another swab, repeat the same procedure on the inner left cheek. It is VERY IMPORTANT to let both swabs air dry at room temperature in a protected place for at least 1 hour. After this time, handling the samples as little as possible, place each person’s swabs in a properly labeled paper envelope (child, alleged father, alleged mother, etc.).

If the samples you have are indirectly collected (nails, hair with roots, cigarette butts, blood stains, semen, etc.), place the samples in separate and well-labeled envelopes. It is important to handle the samples carefully to ensure their integrity, avoiding touching the areas that might contain biological residues.

Once you have the collected and properly labeled samples, you need to download and complete the request form. Finally, send us the samples and the request form by postal mail, certified and urgent, or by courier. Shipping costs are your responsibility.

  • If you wish to carry out this test for judicial validity, the individuals involved must visit our facilities or any of our partner centers (distributed nationwide) where the sample collection can be performed. Contact us, and we will indicate the nearest partner center. To perform the sample collection and complete the chain of custody, participants must provide:
    • ID card or passport
    • For minors, a recent photograph (essential) and a photocopy of the family book or legal authorization proving parental authority over the minor (recommended).
  • The partner center will be responsible for sending us the samples along with all necessary documentation (request form, chain of custody, photocopies of participant documentation, etc.).
