DNA fingerprinting: What is it and what is it used for?
Publicado el: 23/03/2023
The genetic profile or genetic fingerprint is the information contained in the DNA sequences of each person and, with the exception of monozygotic twins, it is different for each individual. This allows it to be used as a kind of personal and non-transferable identifier for each person, as if it were an ID card or a car registration number, since it is practically impossible for two different individuals to have the same genetic markers. The genetic fingerprint is a much more precise identification method than others such as fingerprints.
The genetic fingerprint is obtained from a small sample of the individual’s saliva that is extracted from a cotton swab that is rubbed inside the mouth.
This test has numerous purposes: identifying individuals, identifying human remains, in paternity tests, in compatibility in organ donation… The genetic profile also has applications in forensic tests, since it is one of the fundamental elements to identify people at the police and judicial level, precisely because of the condition of being unique for the vast majority of individuals. Genetic profiling is not only used to identify criminals, but also to identify victims of accidents or to confirm paternity.
